We have always found the French guides difficult as everything is arranged in the Regions/Departments. I have done the same here but have tried to make it straightforward by including maps and complete lists of sites with links.

Falaise. 35km South East of Caen. Municipal site at base of the castle and an easy stroll to the mediaeval town with many restaurants. Neat pleasant site. [2012]

Belleme. Neat campsite in the interesting small town. Good Cambodian restaurant.Excellent alternative to La Ferte Barnard [closed in Sept].

Great site & restaurants. Town is interesting and near campsite.

Ambrières-les-Vallées. South of Domfront, North of Mayenne and Laval. In leisure park by River La Varenne (plan d’eau). Pool. Good local restaurants.

Richelieu. South of Saumur and Tours]. [225 milesfrom Ouistraham].]
Simple municipal site 20 min. walk from nice small town and near huge park. Very good restaurants.
Camping Municipal. 7, route de Chatellerault. 47-58-15-02. [2008]

Saumur. Good large site on island in Loire. 20 min to town. Disappointing; it now has its own small noisy pool and we have to pay to go to the large adjacent pool which is now rather run-down and it has lost its bar. But nice walk to town with good restaurants.

St. Satur. Near Sancerre. [300 miles from Ouistraham].
A very nice riverside site near Sancerre with excellent restaurants in village and nice bike rides.

La Chapelle-d’Angillon. On D940 North of Bourges, South of Aubigny-s-Nere. No pool. Restaurant at 0.8km. Swimming nearby in lake near Chateau.

Aubigny sur Nere. South west of Orleans. Nice wooded site near the Sologne and its Loire chateaus and the vineyards of Sancerre. Small mediaeval town with lovely restaurant.

Lac Rille. 22 Km North of river Loire, North-East of Saumur. Excellent very friendly site in woodland by a large lake which is a bird sanctuary. Easy access for launching kayaks. Small pool [cold out of season]; simple, good camp restaurant. Small shop but no nearby village. Bread delivered. Spotted flycatchers, Black redstart. Little train ran around site on Sunday. [2012]

Indre [36]
Rosnay in La Brenne. West of Chateauroux, South of Mezieres-en-Brenne. Wonderful small municipal site on edge of lake immediately next to very small village. Whole area has many lakes, some of which are bird sanctuaries. Good cycling. Grey and Purple herons, Night heron. [2012]

Indre et Loir [37]
Crouzilles. South west of Tours, East of Chinon. Between Crouzilles and Panzoult.
Great France Passion site. In beautiful farming country. Bought some good wine from their caves (set in limestone cliffs on edge of farm). Excellent for walking and cycling. [2013]

Great wooded site on side of lake. Good swimming. No restaurant. There is a ‘Grand Meaulnes Chateau hidden in the forest.

Royere de Vassiviere (Lac Vassiviere). In Creuse (23) in Limousin. East of Limoges, North East of Eymoutiers. Terrassed site on edge of the lake. Good beach. We learned to kayak here. Restaurants nearby.

Evaux les Bains. South of Montlucon (27km). Municipal site, North of the town beside the chateau.Well-maintained small pitches. No pool but very near municipal pool. On edge of pretty small town with restaurants

Chatel Montagne. North East of Clermand Ferrand and East of Vichy.
Friendly site. Few facilities. Nice walk to village with excellent restaurant. Pool closed in low season.

Arfeuilles. Municipal site. Empty, out of season. No open restaurants. Nice site. Short way north of Chatel Montagne which was closed in 3rd week of September [2009].

    Cantal [15]
Trizac. South West of Clermond Ferrand, East of Mauriac.
Small lake for swimming. Nice views. Wonderful sunsets. Excellent walks over the plateau and long bike rides. Nice small shops. Restaurants in village rarely open but good when they do open [we tend to go out of season]. The mayor got the restaurant to open and we had pig’s cheek and other wonderful stuff.

Neuveglise. 14 Km South of St-Flour. Good friendly terraced site. Nice small pool. Lovely views but not especially good for walking or cycling[2012].

    Hautes-Loire [43]
Baffour nr La Chaise-Dieu. A France Passion site. In Parc Naturel du Livradois Foret. Baffour is off N906 towards Ambert. In a farmyard. Nice country walks. Meals may be provided during season. [2009]

Vorey. 16 Km North of Le Puy en Velay, South West of Clermont Ferrand. Excellent site in good walking country with nice pool. Local restaurants. [2011]

Lus la Croix Haute. Excellent friendly site with good restaurant. Near nice village with more restaurants. Many good walks. In the Vercors on the road to Grenoble. Wonderful area.

Menglon. South East of Die, South of Chatillon de Diois on the edge of Vercors mountains. Large, good campsite for children but not otherwise. Huge paddling pools. Very very long campsite under pine trees by river rocky-bedded river Bez. Nice countryside. This was our alternative to Lus de Croix Haute (further north). [2013]

Pyrenees-Atlantiques [64]
Sauveterre de Béarn. South of Salies-de Bearn, Southeast of Perrelhorade, South of Dax. On bank of River Gave d’Oloron. Simple municipal site. Excellent for swimming in river, and for simple kayaking (with interesting waterfall). Interesting small mediaeval town with nice restaurants. One of our favourite sites.

Lescun. South of Oloron St Marie near D134 to Col du Somport to Spain. One of our favourite campsites in France. Spectacular views of mountains with great walks and cycle rides. Near nice small village.

Lozere [48]
Causse Mejean (wild camping). North East of Millau. Best wild camping in France (their description is ‘Camping Sauvage’ which is perfect for this place. Overseen by vultures. Good bike rides and walks. A long way to civilisation so need to take plenty of water and food.

Col de Croix de Bor (wild camping). In Margeride hills, near St. Alban-s-Limagnole, North of Mende. Excellent wild camp site in. Up long track away from road. Great views, walks and bike rides. [2008]

Le Pont de Montvert. At Finiel. In Cevennes East of Florac on D20. Wonderful simple and wild. Excellent long walks. No restaurant or pool. Small.

St. Enimie. North West of Florac. Nice little town on the Tarn packed with restaurants [20 minutes from site]. Good small pool and shop. Good swimming in Tarn. Slightly difficult access for kayaks. [2011]

Lac de Naussac, Langogne. The lac is North East of Mende by way of Chateauneuf de Randon.
Excellent site on terraces overlooking lake and beautiful countryside. Swimming in lake and boats available from nearby Loisir centre. Small childrens pool. Administered by a hotel on site. Excellent restaurant. No shop but the bar provides coffee milk bread etc (no wine). Great walks and bike rides around lake. Very friendly. [2013, 2014]

Gard [30]
Causse Noir. France Passion site, east of Millau. High, windy and cold. Good restaurant but closed at night. Sold bison stew. Great walks.

Le vigan. In Cevennes,East of Millau, West of Ales, North West of Ganges; half way between Montpellier and Florac. On D999. Very good very friendly site on bank of river Arre, small pool, shop, snack restaurant. Redstarts. [2011, 2012]

St. Julien de la Nef. In Cevennes, between Ganges and Le Vigan. Very nice large shaded site by the river which has many small beaches for swimming. Small children’s pool. Nice restaurant and bar. Free wifi. This was a successful alternative to Le Vigan site. [2013]

Herault [34]
Frontignan. On coast South West of Montpellier. Large expensive site. Good pool. Excellent walks and bike rides. The beach has breakwaters making sea swimming good. Good for birds. Big bar with karaoke sessions etc Local restaurants.

Rieu-Montagne. At North end of Lac du Laouzas, North of La Salvetat.
Nicely separated plots with great views of lake. Small pool, restaurant and shop. Friendly staff.
Camping Indigo RIEUMONTAGNE. 81320 Nages. 33 56 33 72 471. Website [i think this is the site as i cannot find it on indigo site it may have changed]. [2008]

St Pons- de-Thomieres. North West of Beziers. Dutch site; communal dinner is provided on some evenings. Long walk down to town. Karen & Martin. Wooded nice shady site but few facilities. [2006] Cannot find website but for a campsite that may be this click here.

Touchan. c 40 miles North-West of Perpignan. Simple site very near village. Nice small pool. Simple good restaurant. Home of Fitou wine. Near MontAuch.

Gleon. France-Passion site in Corbieres, near Villesques des Corbieres, south-west of Narbonne. Excellent. Bought 3 cases of super wine. Nice walks. Friendly.

Argeles Plages. On coast South East of Perpignan]. Wonderful pools and large site. Good bars, shop and excellent Restaurant. Next to beach. Nesting Hoopoes and nightingales. Good bike rides.

Matamale. South of Carcassonne between Axat and Mont-Louis. At 1500m. Great village restaurant. Wonderful grassy site with sweet smeling conifers, nesting redstarts and good views. Near lake. Nearby swimming pool. Great walks and bike rides.

Saintes Maries de la Mer. In Camargue, South West of Arles. Big dry site on edge of beach. Great walks and rides in the Camargue. Nice pool and small restaurant. 20 minute walk to Saintes Maries which is filled with tourists and every sort of restaurant.

St. Laurent. South West of Castellane, South of Digne-les-Bains. On a Lake nr Verdon Gorge. Nr Lac de St. Croix. Good lake for swimming and gorge for kayaking. Large site amongst pines. Small pool, and camp restaurant good. Very friendly. Nice walks and rides around the lake.

La Larche. Our favourite mountain campsite. set amongst larches on the banks of fast river. Fieldfares, lesser whitethroated warblers. Excellent restaurant in site, run by the owners, and also in nearby village. Magnificent long walks.
